Professor Andrew SIMESTER is the Dean of the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Law (NUS Law) and holds the Amaladass Professorship of Criminal Justice. He joined NUS in 2006 after roles at the University of Cambridge and the University of Nottingham, UK. As a leading scholar in criminal law and theory, his research focuses on legal philosophy, criminal law fundamentals, and restitution. His work has influenced global legal discourse, with citations in senior appellate courts worldwide.
Education: DPhil (University of Oxford), BCom, LLB (University of Auckland). He has held prestigious positions, including an honorary doctorate from Uppsala University (2019), and sits on editorial boards such as the Oxford Journal of Legal Studies and Criminal Law and Philosophy. His recent book Fundamentals of Criminal Law has sparked international academic discussions.
Research interests emphasize criminal law’s theoretical underpinnings, including causation, mens rea, moral responsibility, and the rationale behind criminalization. His publications often bridge legal doctrine with moral philosophy, addressing topics like blameworthiness, outcome-based liability, and the public dimensions of crime.
Awards and recognitions include a fellowship at Wolfson College, Cambridge (2007), and the Edmund-Davies Chair in Criminal Law at King’s College London (2015). His academic contributions extend to editorial roles and advisory boards, reflecting his global influence in legal scholarship.
As Dean since 2023, he balances administrative leadership with ongoing research and teaching, including courses on criminal law theory and its practical applications.
