Andrew Renehan is a Clinical Professor of Cancer Studies and Surgery at the University of Manchester. He leads the Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) Diabesity and Cancer Research Group, focusing on obesity, diabetes, and cancer relationships. He is affiliated with the Christie NHS Foundation Trust as an honorary consultant colorectal surgeon, leading clinical research in surgical oncology and colorectal cancer prevention. His work is split 50:50 between clinical service and research.
Education: MB ChB (University of Manchester, 1995, gold medal in surgical finals) and dentistry (Trinity College Dublin, 1986). PhD thesis on insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) in cancer under Prof. Chris Potten.
Research interests include diabetes-obesity-cancer links, colorectal cancer outcomes, and imaging biomarkers. He chairs the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) Diabetes and Cancer Study Group and co-leads the MCRC clinical training fellowships. His group has published landmark studies on BMI and cancer risk, cited over 1,500 times, quantifying cancer cases attributable to obesity.
Recent articles focus on BMI trajectories, cancer prevention strategies, and clinical outcomes in colorectal and anal cancers. Awards include the Royal College of Surgeons’ Hunterian Professorship (2011) and British Travelling Fellowship (2009).
He supervises 3-4 students and postgraduate fellows at any time, with notable trainees including Rebecca Fish (Lancet Gastro Hepat publication) and Hema Sekhar (Lancet Oncology). Collaborations include Prof. Iain Buchan (health data science) and Prof. Steve Williams (imaging).
