Andrew R. Buller is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on protein engineering, biocatalysis, enzymology, and chemical biology, aiming to expand biological chemical space through enzyme engineering.
- B.S/B.A., University of Iowa (2008)
- Ph.D., Johns Hopkins University (2013)
- Postdoctoral Fellow, California Institute of Technology (2013-2017)
The Buller Lab employs directed evolution and mechanistic studies to develop enzymes that functionalize non-natural precursors, advancing green chemistry and sustainable biosynthesis of pharmaceutical analogs. The lab trains 12 graduate students, 1 postdoctoral researcher, and multiple undergraduates.
Research areas include:
- Engineering C-C and C-X bond-forming enzymes
- PLP (vitamin B6) chemistry and cofactor engineering
- Sequence-activity relationship modeling
- Directed evolution methodology development
- Metabolic pathway expansion with non-canonical residues
