Andrew Pilliar is an Associate Professor at Thompson Rivers University's Faculty of Law. He holds a BSc(H) in Biology and Physics from Queen's University, a JD from the University of Toronto, and an LLM and PhD from the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on improving access to justice through innovative legal service models, market structure analysis, and interdisciplinary approaches. Pilliar previously practiced litigation and insolvency law at national and boutique firms, clerked for the BC Supreme Court, and contributed to the Access to Justice Research Network.
His academic awards include UBC’s Public Scholar Award, Junior Fellowship at Massey College, and Action Canada Fellowship. He teaches courses in Business Associations (LAWF 3800), Civil Procedure (LAWF 3910), Family Law (LAWF 3820), and Access to Justice Policy Responses (LAWF 3780). Pilliar’s TEDx talk on access to justice has garnered significant online viewership.
His research spans pro bono work patterns, lawyer career satisfaction, and graduate legal education reform. Recent work emphasizes 'person-centred justice' frameworks, epidemiological approaches to justice metrics, and vulnerability theory applications in legal systems.
