Andrew Pike serves as an Assistant Professor of Biology in the Department of Biology at Oberlin College's College of Arts and Sciences. He teaches undergraduate courses including Invertebrate Biology (BIOL 345), Organismal Biology (BIOL 100), and Disease Ecology (BIOL 308), employing active learning techniques to foster critical thinking and inclusivity.
His academic credentials feature:
- BA in Biology from Oberlin College (2008)
- MS from Michigan State University (2010)
- PhD from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (2015)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship at University of Maryland School of Medicine (2015-2017)
Dr. Pike's research investigates vector-borne disease systems across biological scales, with fieldwork conducted in the United States (focusing on Oberlin-area ticks and mosquitoes), Thailand, and Malawi. His laboratory examines mosquito immune responses to pathogens like West Nile virus, dengue, and malaria, while exploring interactions between environmental bacteria and vector competence. Complementing his disease ecology work, he conducts biology education research to develop evidence-based teaching methodologies that enhance student learning outcomes.
He manages the Science Center Courtyard Garden and campus beehives, and maintains a personal collection of invertebrates. His professional activities integrate ecological field studies with molecular investigation techniques to understand pathogen transmission dynamics in changing environments.
