Andrew Olewnik is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Education at the University at Buffalo, where he also serves as the Director of Experiential Learning Programs in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. His work focuses on pedagogical innovation and student development in engineering education.
- PhD in Mechanical Engineering (University at Buffalo)
- MS in Mechanical Engineering (University at Buffalo)
- BS in Mechanical Engineering (University at Buffalo)
Olewnik’s research centers on Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and design problem framing, with emphasis on how students articulate requirements, engage in open-ended problems, and develop professional identities. His studies explore co-curricular impact on skill development, sociotechnical complexity in design, and metacognitive strategies for problem-solving.
His recent publications highlight trends in PBL implementation, requirements engineering, and student engagement. He investigates how problem typology influences decision-making, frameworks for assessing PBL environments, and equity in co-curricular participation, particularly through the NSF-funded REFLECT project.
- NSF CAREER Award (2024) for "Recognizing Engineering Formation: Learning Experiences as a Catalyst for Transformation (REFLECT)"
Olewnik teaches courses in engineering education, with a focus on undergraduate curricula. His work bridges design theory, educational practice, and reflective methodologies to enhance student learning outcomes and professional readiness.
