Professor Andrew Norris holds a position in the Department of Political Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), affiliated with the College of Letters and Science. His academic roles include being an affiliated faculty member in the Departments of Philosophy and Religious Studies. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1995. His research focuses on Political Philosophy, Pragmatism, Critical Theory, and the works of thinkers like Stanley Cavell, Hegel, Nietzsche, and Dewey. Recent visiting appointments include Senior Fellow at the Center for Post-Kantian Philosophy (Potsdam Universität, 2023/2024) and Visiting Professor of Philosophy at Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne (spring 2024).
Professor Norris has received fellowships from institutions such as the Max-Planck-Institut für europäische Rechtsgeschichte and Goethe Universität’s Exzellenzcluster 'Normative Orders'. His work spans topics including democratic theory, skepticism in politics, and the intersection of philosophy with religious and ethical thought. He has authored over sixty articles and multiple books, including Becoming Who We Are: Politics and Practical Philosophy in the Work of Stanley Cavell (Oxford UP, 2017). His research has been translated into French and German, and he has delivered invited lectures globally.
Teaching and research interests include seminars on Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit, Nietzsche, and Critical Theory. His publications engage with themes such as neoliberalism, perfectionism, and the philosophical underpinnings of democratic institutions.
