Dr. Andrew McNamara is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering at City, University of London, within the School of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. He has been a key figure in geotechnical research and education since 2004, with a focus on physical modelling, deep excavations, and construction-related geotechnical challenges.
- PhD in Civil Engineering, City, University of London (2001)
- MSc in Geotechnical Engineering, City, University of London (1998)
- BEng (Hons) in Civil Engineering, Kingston University (1995)
His research is centered on controlling ground movements around deep excavations, geotechnical aspects of construction processes, and physical modelling—especially centrifuge modelling of deep foundations and excavations. He also investigates temporary works and construction method engineering. His work bridges academia and industry, informed by prior experience as a civil engineer and ongoing consultancy.
The most recent publications reflect a strong trend in innovative piling technologies, including impression piles, ribbed piles, and reusable foundation systems, often evaluated through centrifuge testing. His research also addresses urban geotechnical risks such as unexploded ordnance in London, demonstrating applied relevance to city-scale infrastructure projects like Crossrail.
Scientific honors include:
- Fleming Award (2004) – for excellence in geotechnical design and construction
- Diploma of the Henry Adams Award (2005)
- Telford Prize (2005)
McNamara has supervised numerous PhD students, including Jignasha Panchal and Hitesh Halai, and led significant research grants and industry collaborations. He chairs ISSMGE TC104 on Physical Modelling in Geotechnics and served as Chair of the Local Organising Committee for ICPMG 2018. He is also an active editorial board member for Ground Engineering and has contributed to major conference proceedings. His research is supported by both academic and industrial partnerships, with ongoing work in sustainable piling, foundation reuse, and advanced physical modelling techniques.
He leads the Geotechnical Centrifuge Facility at City and collaborates with institutions worldwide. His team focuses on experimental validation of novel geotechnical systems, particularly in urban environments where space and risk constraints are high.
