Professor Andrew Marton is a leading scholar in contemporary Chinese studies at the University of Victoria, on study leave until July 2025. He holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia. His research focuses on urbanization patterns in China’s Yangzi delta region, spatial economic development, and the interplay between globalization and rural-urban dynamics. Key areas of expertise include Chinese society, creative industries in cities like Shanghai and Beijing, and educational policy reforms.
His work explores institutional reforms in mega-urban regions, rural industrialization processes, and the doctrinal approach to international law in China. Notable contributions include studies on the Tumen River Area Development Project and the impact of globalization on urban restructuring. Marton has authored influential books such as China’s Spatial Economic Development (2000) and China’s Urban Space (2007), both published by Routledge.
Marton teaches courses on modern Chinese culture, theories in Pacific and Asian studies, and Asian mega-cities. His research bridges geographic, economic, and cultural perspectives to analyze China’s socio-spatial transformations. Current projects include studies on administrative restructuring and the internationalization of Chinese education systems.
