Alexander F. Day is Professor and Chair of Asian Studies at Occidental College, appointed in 2013. He holds a B.A. from Colby College and an M.A./Ph.D. from UC Santa Cruz. His office is located in Swan Hall, where he maintains regular hours for student consultations.
His research focuses on the intellectual, social, and cultural history of agrarian transformation in China, with emphasis on:
- Peasant identity and rural-urban divides
- Capitalist transitions in Chinese agriculture
- Food systems and ecological impacts
- Labor processes in tea production (current book project)
- Rural activism and governance reforms
Day co-directs the collaborative project Feeding China: The Project on China's Food Histories, Geographies, and Ecologies, examining capitalist transformations in agriculture and their socio-ecological consequences. His publications consistently explore themes of agrarian change, labor integration, and rural modernity in 20th-century China, with recent work centered on tea-producing regions of Guizhou.
