Dr. Andrew Martel is a Lecturer in Construction Management and Architecture at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne School of Design. His research focuses on understanding how financing, regulation, and socio-cultural factors impact housing outcomes, particularly in areas like affordable family housing, Indigenous housing, and accessible housing for people with disabilities. He coordinates the undergraduate pathway for the Construction degree and teaches across both Architecture and Construction disciplines.
Key research interests include housing value composition, innovation in construction technologies, and the intersection of disability rights with urban design. He leads projects such as the 'Market Forces or Forcing Markets' study on accessible housing economics and the ARC-funded 'Project HOME' evaluating housing metrics. His work bridges policy analysis with practical design solutions, addressing issues like NDIS-driven housing adaptations and Indigenous land-based housing solutions.
Recent publications explore topics ranging from transaction costs in construction innovation to universal design principles in mental health facilities. His research emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration to create socially just and economically viable housing systems.
