Andrew Mark Spencer is a Senior Tutor and Fellow in History at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge, and an Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of History. His research focuses on English constitutional development, medieval governance, and military systems during the 13th and 14th centuries, with particular attention to the reigns of Edward I and the evolution of 'bastard feudalism.'
His teaching covers British Political History (1050-1509), British Social and Economic History (1050-1500), and European History (1200-1500). He has authored and edited influential works, including Nobility and Kingship in Medieval England (2014) and co-edited the 2017 volume Thirteenth Century England XVI. His research explores themes such as coronation oaths, military retinues, and the dynamics of medieval kingship.
Spencer's publications analyze the intersection of political power, military strategy, and constitutional frameworks in medieval England. He has contributed to debates on Edward I's governance, the role of the nobility, and the socio-political tensions of the period. His work often bridges textual analysis of primary sources with broader historiographical questions.
His scholarship reflects a deep engagement with medieval English political culture, with a focus on how institutional frameworks evolved in response to crises like inadequate kingship and military challenges.
