Andrew Malone, PhD is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC), part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on climate change impacts, glaciology, and paleoclimatology. He combines remote sensing, numerical modeling, and data analysis to study cryosphere dynamics and human exposure to climate shifts.
Education includes a BA in Physics from Wheaton College (2011) and a PhD in Glaciology and Climatology from the University of Chicago (2017). His current projects include glacier studies in Peru/Bolivia and Northern California, and climate exposure analysis in Chicago. He leads the NSF-funded grant 'Glacier resilience during the Holocene and late Pleistocene in northern California' (2024-2026).
Research emphasizes three pillars: (1) cryosphere-climate interactions using glacial records; (2) climate change exposure through demographic analysis; and (3) glacier modeling for future projections. Recent work highlights extreme heat events in urban areas and community vulnerability assessments.
His publications span Geology, Journal of Glaciology, and Quaternary Science Reviews, with over 20 peer-reviewed articles since 2012. Collaborations include institutions like California State Polytechnic University and the University of Chicago.
