Andrew Lewis is an Associate Professor at the University of Cincinnati’s School of Public and International Affairs and founding Executive Director of the Portman Center for Policy Solutions. His academic work bridges law, politics, and religion, with a focus on the United States. He has authored and co-authored influential publications on topics such as conservative Christian political movements, First Amendment jurisprudence, and the intersection of religious identity and partisan behavior.
- Education: Ph.D. in American Politics and Law and Society from American University (2011); M.A. in Ethics from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (2006); B.S. in History from Truman State University (2003).
Lewis’s research explores how religious groups navigate legal and political systems, particularly in debates over abortion, same-sex marriage, and religious freedom. His work often examines how rights discourse shapes conservative political agendas and institutional dynamics. Recent studies analyze Christian nationalism, civil religion dimensions, and experimental responses to service refusal policies.
His scholarly contributions include the award-winning book The Rights Turn in Conservative Christian Politics (Cambridge, 2017) and co-authorship of The Full Armor of God (Cambridge Elements, 2023). He co-edits the journal Politics and Religion and has received competitive grants for research on religious freedom and interfaith relations.
