معرفی
Professor Andrew J Smith is Professor of Clinical Bacteriology at the Dental School within the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing at the University of Glasgow. He simultaneously serves as an Honorary Consultant Microbiologist for NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, Director of the Bacterial Respiratory Infections Service at the Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratory (SMiRL), and Lead Consultant for Oral and Maxillofacial Microbiology for NHS GG&C.
His research focuses on clinical bacteriology with particular emphasis on respiratory pathogens including Haemophilus influenzae, Legionella pneumophila, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Bordetella pertussis. He leads a significant program investigating the epidemiology and microbiology of severe odontogenic infections and serves as chair of the Scottish Antimicrobial Stewardship in Dentistry group. His work bridges laboratory research with clinical practice, ensuring scientific advances translate to improved patient care in both dental and broader medical contexts.
Professor Smith's publication record demonstrates consistent focus on bacterial genomics, epidemiology of infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, and infection control. His recent work (2023-2025) shows increasing emphasis on genomic surveillance techniques, vaccine effectiveness studies, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on infectious disease patterns. The research demonstrates strong collaboration with national and international partners across multiple disciplines.
He holds several significant leadership positions including President of the Scottish Microbiology Association and Assistant editor of the Journal of Hospital Infection. These roles reflect his standing in the scientific community and commitment to advancing knowledge in clinical microbiology and infection control.
Professor Smith has led numerous research projects including the Scottish arm of the 'Be on the TEAM-teenagers against meningitis' study and initiatives to introduce real-time Whole Genome Sequencing for the Scottish Bacterial Respiratory Infections Service. His work has been instrumental in national projects related to decontamination in healthcare settings with the objective of reducing the risk of iatrogenic vCJD.
His laboratory and research team operate within the NHS framework at Level 5, New Lister Building, Glasgow Royal Infirmary, collaborating closely with Health Protection Scotland teams to coordinate the Reference Laboratory service. This integrated approach ensures rapid translation of research findings into clinical practice and public health interventions.
