Professor Andrew Hopper is a historian specializing in religion, politics, and society in early modern England, particularly the British and Irish Civil Wars. He holds a professorship in Local and Social History at the University of Oxford’s Department for Continuing Education, affiliated with Kellogg College. Previously, he was a lecturer and director at the University of Leicester’s Centre for English Local History. His research focuses on early modern British history, public engagement, and collaborative projects with museums and schools.
Education:
- PhD in History, University of York (1999), thesis on parliamentarian allegiance in civil-war Yorkshire.
Research Interests: He is renowned for his works on civil-war dynamics, including his monographs on Sir Thomas Fairfax and side-changers in the English Civil Wars. Current projects include a study on widowhood during the Civil Wars, funded by the AHRC. He chairs Midland History’s editorial board and leads the National Civil War Centre’s exhibitions, such as Battle-Scarred.
Grants & Projects:
- AHRC-funded Civil War Petitions Project (2017-2022) as Principal Investigator.
- Previously led JISC and AHRC projects on historical digitization.
Media & Outreach: He has appeared on BBC, Channel 4, and collaborated with the Royal Shakespeare Company on disability representation in Shakespeare’s era. His media work includes historical advising and public exhibitions.
