Andrew Ayton

Dr. Andrew Ayton is a Senior Research Fellow at the School of Humanities, Keele University, following his retirement as Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Hull in 2015 after 30 years of service. He specializes in medieval military and maritime history, with particular focus on England's naval capabilities during the Hundred Years War and late medieval conflict dynamics. Current roles include advisory board membership for the AHRC-funded 'Evolution of English Shipping Capacity' project (Southampton, 2014–present) and ESRC Peer Review College membership (2012–present). He also serves as Trustee of the Battle of Crécy Trust.

His research collaborations include projects with Dr. Philip Morgan (medieval warfare) and Dr. Simon Harris (War of St Sardos). Key interests span maritime communities, naval warfare strategies, and transcultural military interactions. Recent work includes co-authoring studies on English shipping capacity and medieval Hungarian military history.

Publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches to naval and military history, including edited volumes on the Battle of Crécy and a re-examination of late medieval warfare. His current projects involve co-authored books on maritime dimensions of 14th-century English warfare and a database of 14th-century English shipping records.

Grants include AHRC and ESRC funding contributions. He maintains active engagement with historical organizations and has contributed to public history initiatives through his editorial and advisory roles.
