Dr Andrew Heath is a Lecturer in American History at the University of Sheffield's School of History, Philosophy and Digital Humanities. He holds a BA from the University of London (2001) and a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (2008). His research focuses on 19th-century U.S. political and urban history, with a transnational lens. He has authored award-winning books like In Union There Is Strength: Philadelphia in the Age of Urban Consolidation (2019) and is working on a project exploring monarchy debates in post-Civil War America. A dedicated educator, he has won multiple teaching awards, including the Senate Award for Early Career Teaching (2013).
He supervises PhD students in U.S. history, urban studies, and transnational themes. His current students include Sylvia Broeckx (PhD on Civil War sexual violence) and Andrew Barnes (PhD on East Riding County Council history). He is affiliated with the Centre for Nineteenth-Century Studies and contributes to the Encyclopedia of Greater Philadelphia. Teaching modules include courses on U.S. history, revolutions, and urban studies. Outside academia, he enjoys cycling in the Peak District.
Research interests include urban consolidation, political radicalism, and transatlantic social politics. His work bridges local Philadelphia dynamics with broader national and global contexts. He has published widely on topics like labor reform, monarchy debates, and railroad influence on urban development. Awards highlight his excellence in teaching and student mentorship.
