Professor Andrew Davison is an Affiliate Professor in the School of Infection & Immunity at the University of Glasgow. He is affiliated with the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research, where he leads research on herpesvirus genomics and evolution.
Professor Davison's primary research focus is on the content, function, and evolution of herpesvirus genomes, with particular emphasis on human cytomegalovirus (HCMV). His current research program investigates HCMV as it exists in real infections, with specific interests in sequencing whole HCMV genomes from clinical samples (even those with very low viral loads), relating viral diversity and evolution to clinical outcomes, and determining the functions of viral non-coding RNAs as potential targets for antiviral drug development. His group's main expertise lies in high-throughput DNA sequencing.
Professor Davison's research has significant implications for understanding and treating HCMV, which is the leading infectious cause of abnormalities in newborn babies and poses serious risks to immunocompromised individuals such as transplant recipients. His work bridges fundamental virology with clinical applications, contributing to both theoretical understanding of viral evolution and practical approaches to combat viral diseases.
His research collaborations include Professor Gavin Wilkinson from Cardiff University, Professor Thomas Schulz from Hanover Medical School, and Dr. Colin Geddes from Glasgow Western Infirmary. These collaborations span multiple institutions and countries, reflecting the international nature of virology research.
Professor Davison has published extensively throughout his career, with publications dating back to the 1970s and continuing through to 2025. His work covers diverse aspects of herpesvirus biology, from basic genome structure and function to clinical applications and viral evolution.
