Professor Pamela Vallely serves as Professor of Medical Virology within the Division of Evolution, Infection and Genomics at the University of Manchester. She currently holds leadership positions as President of the European Society for Clinical Virology (2022-2025) and Secretary of the European Congenital Cytomegalovirus Initiative (ECCI). Her academic career at Manchester spans over three decades, progressing from Lecturer (1991-2005) to Senior Lecturer (2005-2012) and ultimately Professor (2012-present).
Her research focuses on Congenital Viral Infections (particularly Cytomegalovirus and Parvovirus B19) and Viral Infections of the Central Nervous System. Methodologically, she employs cell culture, immunoassay, viral assay, molecular virology, PCR, sequencing, and NGS techniques. Her work significantly contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals through medical virology research.
Professor Vallely directs the MSc Medical and Molecular Virology program and coordinates multiple virology units including BIOL 65201 (Introductory Medical and Molecular Virology), BIOL 65221 (Viruses and Disease 2), and BIOL 65242 (Research Skills in Practice). Her recent publications demonstrate leadership in congenital cytomegalovirus management guidelines and viral pathogenesis research, with emphasis on glycoprotein polymorphisms and viral co-infections.
