Andrew Davison is the Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford, based at Christ Church, where he is also a residentiary canon. Previously, he held the Starbridge Professorship in Theology and Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge (2014–2024) and served as a visiting fellow at the Center of Theological Inquiry (2022–2024). His academic career bridges natural sciences and theology, with early degrees in Chemistry (MA, Oxford) and Biochemistry (DPhil, Oxford), followed by theological training at Cambridge (MA and PhD in Medieval Theology).
Research interests focus on Christian doctrine, particularly the scholastic tradition of Thomas Aquinas and participation metaphysics, alongside theological engagement with natural science and technology (e.g., AI/ML, astrobiology). He is a founding member of the Leverhulme Centre for Life in the Universe and a UK FIRES programme fellow. Current projects explore the theological implications of astrobiology, climate change ethics, and applications of scholastic metaphysics to AI.
Publications include Astrobiology and Christian Doctrine (2023), Participation: An Exploration in Christian Doctrine and Metaphysics (2019), and contributions to the Oxford Handbook of Deification (2024). He edits the Cambridge Elements in Christianity and Science and Cambridge Elements in the Origins of Life.
Teaching focuses on systematic theology and Christian doctrine at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary dialogue between theology, philosophy, and natural sciences, particularly addressing contemporary issues like AI ethics and climate change.
