Dr. Andrew DJ Shield is an Assistant Professor of Migration History at Leiden University, affiliated with the interdisciplinary 'Social Citizenship and Migration' project. He chairs Leiden’s LGBT+ Network and focuses on sexuality, race, and diversity in post-1945 Europe. He holds dual PhDs in History (CUNY Graduate Center, 2015) and Communication (Roskilde University, 2018). His work bridges migration studies, queer history, and social media analysis.

Research Interests: Shield examines LGBTQ+ histories, migration patterns, and intersectional identities through oral histories, archival materials, and digital ethnography. His books Immigrants in the Sexual Revolution and Immigrants on Grindr explore how migrants navigate race, sexuality, and belonging in Europe. He employs postcolonial frameworks to critique Eurocentric narratives in migration studies.
