Andrew D. Friend

Professor Andrew D. Friend is Professor of Earth Systems Science in the Department of Geography at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Clare College. He is a member of both the Climate and Environmental Dynamics and Biogeography and Biogeomorphology research groups at the Conservation Research Institute. His work focuses on understanding plant physiology within the Earth system, particularly carbon relations, growth processes, and competitive interactions within ecosystems.

Friend's research employs mathematical models to explore biological system functions and predict future behavior under changing climate and atmospheric CO₂ conditions. His primary modeling tool is the hybrid14 dynamic global vegetation model. To support model development, his team conducts experimental work growing hybrid poplar trees under various conditions to investigate wood formation and whole-tree growth controls. His research interests span plant physiology, ecosystem dynamics, global biogeochemical cycles (especially the carbon cycle), and climate systems.

Analysis of Friend's recent publications reveals a strong focus on wood formation processes, carbon source-sink dynamics in plants, and the integration of these processes into global vegetation models. His work bridges experimental biology with large-scale Earth system modeling, particularly examining how tree growth responds to environmental factors like soil water and temperature. Recent work has expanded into understanding deforestation impacts on the Amazon tipping point and fire effects on plant-soil water relations.

Professor Friend has supervised numerous PhD students throughout his career, including current student Ciara Greaves. His research group includes Dr. Manoj Hariharan and other collaborators working on projects such as "Beyond photosynthesis: overturning source-centric plant growth paradigms," "hybrid14: an individual-based Dynamic Global Vegetation Model," and "Landscape regeneration solutions to the interlinked extinction and climate crises."
