Dr. Andrew Conly serves as Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Geology at Lakehead University, concurrently holding an Associate Professor position at the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining & Exploration. His expertise spans mineral deposit systems, experimental geochemistry, and environmental remediation with active collaborations across Canada, USA, Mexico, and France.
Academic credentials include a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from Carleton University followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto, establishing his foundation in geological sciences and analytical methodologies.
Research centers on three interconnected pillars: Experimental Mineralogy and Geochemistry (establishing Canada's only university facility for water-rock/melt-volatile partitioning studies via CFI/NSERC grants), Environmental Mineralogy and Geochemistry (addressing acid-mine drainage at Ontario's Steep Rock site through Ministry of Natural Resources partnerships), and Ore Genesis (investigating metal deposit formation in northwestern Ontario, Minnesota, and Mexico). His work integrates 12+ analytical techniques including SEM-EDX, EMPA, ICP-MS, and stable isotope analysis to solve challenges in resource extraction and environmental protection.
No scientific awards were documented in the source material.
Dr. Conly secures significant funding through CFI New Opportunities and NSERC equipment grants, enabling groundbreaking experimental facilities. He mentors students in field projects across three countries while collaborating with government agencies (Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources), mining companies, and international academic teams. Current initiatives include strategic material testing and radwaste treatment applications.
He directs the Mineralogical and Experimental Laboratory (CB2026 & 2021A) and co-leads the Steep Rock remediation program with Biology Department colleagues, focusing on contaminated water/soil systems.
