Rev Dr Andrew Byers is a Lecturer in New Testament at Ridley Hall within the Cambridge Theological Federation and serves as an Affiliated Lecturer in the Faculty of Divinity at the University of Cambridge. Prior to joining Cambridge in 2021, he was Director of the Free Church Track and Lecturer in New Testament at Cranmer Hall, St John's College, Durham University. With 13 years of pastoral ministry experience, his work bridges academia and practical theology, addressing both scholarly and ecclesial audiences. He holds a PhD from Durham University on Johannine ecclesiology, following an MDiv from Beeson Divinity School and a ThM from Duke Divinity School, alongside an undergraduate degree in Forestry.
His research focuses on New Testament studies, particularly the Gospel of John, Christology, and early Christian literature. Key interests include Johannine theology, the intersection of systematic theology and biblical scholarship, and Jewish-Christian relations. His publications analyze gospel genre, ecclesiological themes, and reception history, reflecting a commitment to interdisciplinary theological inquiry.
Andrew’s recent articles emphasize literary analysis of Mark’s Gospel, nonviolent resistance in Johannine ethics, and the oneness motif in John’s theology. His work consistently engages early Christian texts within their historical and theological contexts, offering fresh insights into their contemporary relevance.
