Andres Henao Castro

Andres Henao Castro is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Boston. His work bridges ancient and contemporary political theory through decolonial theory, critical theory, feminist theory, psychoanalysis, and settler colonial critique. He has held prestigious fellowships at the Academy of Global Humanities and Critical Theory (University of Bologna/Duke University, 2018–2020) and Amherst College (Karl Lowenstein Fellow, 2014).

Henao Castro’s research interrogates the intersection of politics and aesthetics under gender-differentiated colonial logics of capitalist accumulation. His 2021 book Antigone in the Americas critiques the theoretical reception of Sophocles’ tragedy in democratic theory, queer and feminist theory, and biopolitics, foregrounding settler colonial dynamics. His 2022 book The Militant Intellect explores conceptual personae in critical theory, while his 2020–2022 peer-reviewed articles address natality, ontological captivity, and settler colonialism in human rights discourse.

His publications span journals like Critical Philosophy of Race, differences: A Journal of Feminist Cultural Studies, and Hypatia. Recurring themes include anti-Blackness, deconstruction, performance philosophy, and critiques of neoliberalism. Henao Castro’s article analyses often employ psychoanalysis to dissect biopolitical and colonial structures.
