Andres Aslan is a Professor of Geology at Colorado Mesa University (CMU). He specializes in geomorphology, focusing on the evolution of large river systems such as the Colorado, Gunnison, and Mississippi rivers. Aslan has been at CMU for 14 years, teaching courses like Principles of Geology and Natural Hazards. His research emphasizes Late Cenozoic landscape evolution, river incision, and sediment analysis. He currently leads a National Science Foundation-funded grant studying the Upper Colorado River's long-term evolution, collaborating with students on fieldwork and lab analyses at institutions like the University of Arizona’s LASERCHRON lab.
Education:
- PhD, University of Colorado-Boulder
- MS, University of Colorado-Boulder
- BS, Brown University
Research focuses on river systems' historical and tectonic drivers, including fluvial dynamics, glacial deposits, and detrital zircon geochronology. Notable projects include analyzing sediment samples from Wyoming and Colorado to trace river evolution. Aslan actively mentors students, with recent projects on Grand Mesa terraces and Browns Park Formation geology. He aims to establish an MS in Geology program at CMU.
Grants & Students: Principal investigator on a 3-year NSF grant; supervises 3 students annually, including co-authorship on publications with Marisa Boraas.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with the University of Arizona's LASERCHRON lab and interdisciplinary teams studying the Colorado River system.
