Andreas Thon

Prof. Dr. Andreas Thon serves as Head of Institute and holds the Professorship for Construction Technology in Landscape Architecture at the Department of Landscaping & Vegetation Technology, Geisenheim University. He has held this position since May 1, 2016, and additionally serves on the Committee for Research & Development (FuEAus).

His academic journey began with practical experience as a gardener and landscaper starting in 1997. He earned his Diploma in Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning from TFH Berlin in 2004, followed by a Master's degree in International Architecture (Landscape Architecture) in 2009. He completed his dissertation at the University of Vechta in 2014 titled "Investigation of vegetation and flow through the filter zone of small bath ponds".

Prof. Thon's research focuses on Construction Technology in Landscape Architecture, with significant contributions to Water Management, Irrigation Systems, and the implementation of Building Information Modeling (BIM) in landscape architecture. His work bridges theoretical knowledge with practical applications, emphasizing sustainable solutions for climate adaptation challenges in urban environments.

His recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on digital transformation in landscape architecture education, site-adapted irrigation systems, and sustainable water management. These works highlight his expertise in integrating technological advancements with traditional landscape architecture practices to address contemporary environmental challenges.

Prof. Thon leads the significant research project "BIOCHAR-MACADAM URBAN-GREEN SUBSTRATES AS CLIMATE ADAPTATION AND MITIGATION STRATEGY" (2023-2026), funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment. This project focuses on developing alternative tree substrates to mitigate urban heat islands and manage heavy rainfall events.

He has presented numerous lectures across Germany and internationally on sustainable irrigation, BIM implementation, and biologically filtered swimming ponds, demonstrating his active engagement with both academic and professional communities in landscape architecture.
