Andreas Reckwitz is a Professor of Social Theory and Cultural Sociology at the Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Humboldt University of Berlin. His office is located at Universitätsstraße 3b, room 321a, 10117 Berlin, with mailing address at Unter den Linden 6, 10099 Berlin. Recognized as one of Germany's leading sociologists, Reckwitz was awarded the prestigious Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2019, the highest research honor in Germany.
Reckwitz's research focuses on the transformation of modern society, particularly the shift from industrial modernity to what he terms 'late modernity.' His work centers on the concept of the 'society of singularities,' where uniqueness and singularity have become the dominant social values, replacing the norms of industrial modernity. He has developed influential theories on the 'creativity dispositif' and the 'aesthetic economy,' examining how creativity has become institutionalized across various social spheres. His theoretical approach bridges cultural sociology, poststructuralism, and practice theory, offering a distinctive framework for understanding contemporary social transformations.
His publications reveal consistent engagement with themes of subjectivity, cultural transformation, and social change. The most recent articles show an increasing focus on loss, crisis, and the challenges of late modern society, reflecting his ongoing development of social theory to address contemporary issues. His work spans academic journals, public intellectual contributions in major media outlets like DIE ZEIT and DER SPIEGEL, and influential monographs that have shaped sociological discourse internationally.
