Andreas Kavazis is the Wayne T. Smith Distinguished Professor at the School of Kinesiology, Auburn University, where he leads research in the Department of Kinesiology. His laboratory investigates molecular, cellular, and physiological adaptations in tissues under metabolic stress, including exercise, inactivity, reproduction, and lactation.
Dr. Kavazis specializes in mitochondrial bioenergetics and cellular metabolism, with a focus on oxidant production and antioxidant defense systems in skeletal and cardiac muscle. His recent work extends to comparative biology, analyzing mitochondrial function across species.
Research interests include:
- Mitochondrial adaptations during metabolic loads
- Antioxidant defense mechanisms in muscle tissues
- Cross-species comparisons of mitochondrial physiology
- Interplay between exercise, lactation, and cellular metabolism
