Andreas Heinz is a Professor of Psychiatry at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, affiliated with Humboldt-Universität Berlin. He has served as Director and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy since 2002, with prior roles at Universität Heidelberg and the Central Institute of Mental Health Mannheim (2000-2002). His work integrates neurobiological and sociocultural approaches to mental health, focusing on schizophrenia, addiction, and affective disorders.
- Education: MD (magna cum laude) from Ruhr-University Bochum (1988), MA in Philosophy from Freie Universität Berlin (1994), and medical studies completed at Ruhr-University Bochum (1980-1984) and Freie Universität Berlin (1984-1987).
His research explores genotype-environment interactions in psychiatric disorders, including serotonin and dopamine dysfunctions in alcoholism, schizophrenia, and major depression. He has contributed to computational neuroscience, neuroimaging, and transcultural psychiatry, with a focus on social stress factors and flexible learning alterations in mental disorders.
Andreas Heinz has received the Wilhelm-Feuerlein-Award (2000) and secured major grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), European Union (IMAGEN, EUGATE), and Federal Ministry of Education and Research. He serves on advisory boards for journals like European Psychiatry and Deutsches Ärzteblatt.
He has taught psychiatry and neurology at multiple institutions, including Humboldt-Universität Berlin (since 2002) and Ruhr-Universität Bochum (1989-1991). Community involvement includes refugee counseling and social work with immigrant children.
