Andreas Gailus is a Professor and Chair of Germanic Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan, serving as Director of Graduate Studies. He holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and has taught at the University of Chicago and the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on intersections of German literature with philosophy, psychoanalysis, and questions of literary form, particularly exploring the conceptual foundations of Western modernity through German cultural artifacts.
Notable publications include Forms of Life: Aesthetics and Biopolitics in German Culture (2020) and Passions of the Sign (2006). He received the 2019 John Dewey Award for his dedication to undergraduate education.
