Andrea Velich is Associate Professor (Habil.) at the School of English and American Studies, Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest, and founding director of the BA specialisation “Film and Culture”. She teaches and publishes on Tudor London, British monarchy, urban ritual, and the representation of history and heritage in British cinema.
Education & training:
- MA in English and History teaching, ELTE
- PhD dissertation on early-Tudor London (archival research Oxford & London)
- Habilitation on the social history of London
Research interests: Interdisciplinary work on British medieval and early-modern society, London’s economic and ceremonial life, women’s history, cemetery history, and the cinematic recycling of these themes in heritage and contemporary British film.
Her recent articles (2021-2023) cluster around two strands: close readings of Ken Loach’s social-issue films and the iconography of the Thames in post-war London-set cinema, complemented by earlier foundational studies on Henry VII’s fiscal policy, London guilds, and the “monarchy film” genre.
Academic service & outreach:
- Founder and director, ELTE BA Film and Culture track (since 2015)
- Organiser, monthly Reel Eye film club and annual Reel Eye conference
- Invited lecturer, University of Düsseldorf (two years)
- Research fellowships: Merton College, Oxford; Warburg Institute, London; Collegium Budapest
She has held teaching or exam commitments at ELTE Teacher Training Faculty, Hungarian University of Technology, Corvinus University, Metropolitan College and Central European University, and regularly supervises BA theses within the Film and Culture programme.
