Andrea Scott-Bell is an Assistant Professor in the Sociology of Sport within the Department of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation at Northumbria University. She joined Northumbria in 2016 after holding lectureships at Nottingham Trent University and Chichester University. Her academic career focuses on the intersection of sociology, sport, and healthcare systems, with particular expertise in athlete wellbeing and the organizational aspects of sports medicine.
Dr. Scott-Bell completed her PhD at Loughborough University in 2010, which examined the professionalisation, formalisation and bureaucratisation of sport and exercise medicine in British Olympic sports. Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Sports Science from Loughborough University (2010)
- MSc in Sports Science (2006)
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA, 2016)
- Member of the British Sociological Association (BSA, 2006)
Dr. Scott-Bell's primary research interests center on athlete healthcare and wellbeing in sport, though she has also conducted work on wellbeing within non-sport organizations. She employs qualitative research methods including vignettes and film to capture experiences of those she studies. Her work examines sport and social inequalities, the organization and professionalization of sport and exercise medicine, practitioner boundaries in multidisciplinary medical teams, and contextual factors affecting healthcare professionals' management of illness and injury.
Her recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on concussion research in American football, mental health in elite sports, and the sociological aspects of sport mega-events like the Commonwealth Games. There's a clear trajectory in her work examining the intersection of healthcare systems, athlete wellbeing, and organizational structures within sports contexts, with increasing attention to policy implementation and safeguarding issues.
Dr. Scott-Bell actively supervises postgraduate research students, including:
- Michael Wood: Spectator segmentation and preferences for enhancements in an EPL stadium in the digital era (2024-)
- Uduak-Abasi Mary Udofa: Medical Mistrust, Physical Activity Intervention Uptake and Co-Creation of Culturally Appropriate Healthcare Policy (2024-)
- Anna Wippich: EMDR Trauma Research in Low to Middle Income Countries (2019-2025)
