Dr. Powell's research program centers on athletic retirement phenomena, specifically examining NCAA athletes' transitions out of competitive sport. This focus directly stems from her extensive pre-academic career as a sports performance coach working with Olympians, NFL athletes, youth competitors, and active adults across clinical and private settings. Her applied experience informs both her scholarly work and pedagogical approach within exercise science education.
Prior to joining Augustana, she served as an instructor of kinesiology and sport management at the University of South Dakota, bridging her practical coaching expertise with academic instruction.
