Lucarelli's research primarily focuses on place branding (cities, regions, and nations), with additional interests in the geographical and historical dimensions of consumption, advertising and marketing; cultural and political aspects of branding in public-private sectors; and the role of digital technology in sport and tourism markets. He employs qualitative methodologies and socio-cultural and political theories to explore these areas. His work often examines the relationship between spatial planning and place branding, as well as the political dimensions of brand governance.
His recent publications reveal a clear trend toward examining the political and social dimensions of place branding, with increasing focus on sustainability, inclusivity, and the role of digital platforms in shaping brand narratives. His work bridges theoretical marketing concepts with practical applications in urban development and policy-making, particularly evident in his studies of Nordic place branding approaches and their global relevance.

Lucarelli has developed innovative teaching methods including a pedagogical role game called 'brandopoly' and has extensive experience teaching across various marketing subjects including Public Sector Marketing, Political Marketing, Marketing Theory, Advertising Strategies, Tourism and Hospitality, and Sustainability in Destination (MBA), as well as methodology courses. His research has been published in high-impact journals and he has collaborated with numerous international scholars across Europe.
He is an active member of the Research Group for Consumer Culture Theory, which focuses on consumer culture as an interconnected system of commercially produced objects, images, and texts used by market actors to construct practices, identities, and meanings.
