Dr Andrea L. Brock is a Lecturer in the School of Classics at the University of St Andrews, where she also directs the Centre for Ancient Environmental Studies (CAES). She holds a PhD from the University of Michigan (2017) and has conducted extensive research on Rome’s environmental and urban history. Her work integrates geoarchaeology with historical records to explore how environmental factors shaped early Roman urbanization. Current research focuses on the Tiber River’s role in Rome’s development, including flood dynamics and sedimentation impacts.
Education: BA in Classical Archaeology (UNC Chapel Hill, 2009), MAs in Latin and Classical Archaeology (University of Michigan), PhD (2017). Awards include a Leverhulme Research Fellowship (2019–2022) and an RSE Award for CAES (2021–2023).
Research interests span environmental archaeology, human-environment interactions, and sustainability in antiquity. She leads the Forum Boarium Project, conducting coring surveys to reconstruct ancient landscapes. Teaching includes limited capacity modules on environmental history and Roman adaptation to natural challenges.
