معرفی
Professor Andrea Brand is the Herchel Smith Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of Cambridge and a Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator at the Gurdon Institute. She is affiliated with the Department of Physiology, Development and Neuroscience, where her research focuses on neural stem cell biology, epigenetics, and brain regeneration.
- Education: BA Hons in Biochemistry (University of Oxford), PhD at MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology (University of Cambridge)
Her research explores the molecular mechanisms controlling neural stem cell quiescence and reactivation, particularly how environmental signals influence stem cell behavior, transcriptional/epigenetic changes during proliferation, and connections between uncontrolled stem cell division and cancer. Recent work highlights advanced imaging techniques and genetic approaches in Drosophila models.
Publications reveal trends in neural stem cell dynamics, chromatin accessibility, temporal patterning, and cross-species conservation of regulatory factors. Key themes include Notch signaling, WNT/RTK pathway interactions, and epigenetic therapies for neurodegenerative diseases.
- Scientific Awards: Fellow of the Royal Society and Academy of Medical Sciences, Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award, Rosalind Franklin Award, Hooke Medal
She leads the Wellcome Trust Laboratories at the Gurdon Institute and has held continuous research funding since 1993. Her lab employs cutting-edge tools like NanoDam and RNA-DamID to study chromatin binding and cell-type-specific transcriptional programs.
