Andre Walther is an Associate Professor at Cedar Crest College, where he combines teaching and research in the biological sciences. He holds a B.A. in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Northern Iowa, a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Brandeis University.
His research focuses on understanding the role of Replication Protein A (RPA) in DNA replication, cell cycle regulation, and DNA damage repair using the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. This work aims to elucidate mechanisms underlying human cancers and genetic disorders. He teaches courses such as Cell and Molecular Biology, Advanced Recombinant Techniques, and Cell Culture and Microscopy.
Walther has maintained an active research lab at Cedar Crest, involving students in cutting-edge projects. Numerous students have presented their findings at national conferences and secured internships at top U.S. institutions. He is a member of the American Society of Cell Biology, American Society for Microbiology, Pennsylvania Academy of Sciences, and Sigma Xi Research Honor Society.
He emphasizes the importance of inquiry-driven learning, advising students to prioritize asking insightful questions. Walther chose Cedar Crest for its emphasis on undergraduate research collaboration, enabling students to engage in lab work from their first year. His inspiration stems from witnessing students' academic and personal growth through research. Family influence (his parents were educators) and early teaching experiences in graduate school solidified his dedication to education.
