Professor André Van Zundert is the Chair of Anaesthesiology at the University of Queensland, leading the Royal Brisbane Clinical Unit and the Centre for Excellence & Innovation in Anaesthesia. He holds an Honorary Professor position at the Queensland Brain Institute, where he investigates anaesthesia reversal agents targeting neurotransmission receptors.
- Doctoral Diploma of Medicine from Catholic University of Leuven
- Doctor of Philosophy from Leiden University
- Masters (Coursework) from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore
- Royal College of Anaesthetists certification
His research spans airway management, regional anaesthesia, obstetric anaesthesia, and medical education. Recent work focuses on videolaryngoscopy implementation, anaesthesia reversal mechanisms, and immune responses to blood transfusions. Collaborations with the van Swinderen Lab aim to address delayed anaesthesia recovery through brain organoid models.
Current projects include:
- NHMRC IDEAS Grant (2025-2028): Reversing presynaptic anaesthetic mechanisms
- Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists Grant (2025-2026): Human brain organoid models for anaesthesia reversal
Past grants explored optimizing lignocaine infusions for obese patients and epidural insertion challenges.
He supervises PhD candidates in anaesthesia data science, pharmacokinetics, and brain organoid consciousness studies, collaborating with experts like Professor David Sturgess and Professor Bruno van Swinderen.
