Kyle Pattinson

Kyle Pattinson serves as a Senior Clinical Research Fellow, Consultant Anaesthetist, and Associate Professor at the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences (NDCN). He is affiliated with the Division of Anaesthetics and leads research within Breathe Oxford and the Oxford Subarachnoid Haemorrhage Research Group, focusing on respiratory control mechanisms and advanced neuroimaging techniques.

Dr. Pattinson holds a BM (Bachelor of Medicine), DPhil (Doctor of Philosophy), and FRCA (Fellowship of the Royal College of Anaesthetists), demonstrating his dual expertise in clinical medicine and advanced research. His educational background has prepared him for bridging clinical practice with cutting-edge neuroscience research.

His primary research focuses on neuroscience of respiratory control, investigating how the brain regulates breathing and how this control is disrupted in chronic obstructive airways disease, asthma, neurodegenerative conditions, sleep apnoea, and sudden infant death syndrome. A significant portion of his work examines the mechanisms underlying breathlessness, a major debilitating symptom worldwide. Another major research strand involves imaging brain perfusion changes following aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage, where he develops novel MRI techniques without contrast agents to measure cerebral perfusion at tissue level, potentially improving detection and treatment of delayed cerebral ischaemia.

Dr. Pattinson's research bridges clinical anaesthesiology with advanced neuroscience, with particular applications for understanding respiratory depressant effects of pain medications like morphine. His recent publications reveal expertise spanning neonatal respiration, breathlessness mechanisms, cerebral ischemia, and ventilatory responses across different populations.
