Dr. Andre Keil is a historian specializing in modern European history at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), where he works as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Humanities and Social Science. Previously, he held lecturing positions at the University of Sunderland (2016-2019) and Durham University (2014-2016). He earned his PhD from the University of Northumbria at Newcastle (2015) and an MA from the Free University of Berlin (2011).

Keil's research focuses on the interplay between state authority and civil liberties during wartime, particularly in Britain and Germany between 1850 and 1950. His work explores topics such as emergency governance, media and historical memory of the First World War, and transnational civil liberties movements in interwar Europe. He supervises research students on subjects ranging from the political impact of the World Wars to modern German history.
Recent publications include his monograph Emergency Powers and the Home Fronts in Britain and Germany during the First World War (Oxford University Press, 2025) and journal articles on wartime civil liberties, gendered language in right-wing populism, and the National Council for Civil Liberties. His research spans comparative historical analysis, political science, and legal studies, with a focus on state of exception, wartime governance, and transnational activism.
