Professor Sir Andre Geim is a Regius Professor and Royal Society Research Professor at the University of Manchester, renowned for his groundbreaking work on graphene. He holds dual British and Dutch citizenship and was born in Russia in 1958. His career began in Moscow before postdoctoral research at the Universities of Nottingham, Bath, and Copenhagen. He joined the University of Manchester in 2001 after holding a tenured professorship in the Netherlands.
His research focuses on condensed matter physics, including diamagnetic levitation, gecko tape, and graphene. Over 50 of his papers have been cited over 1,000 times, with 10 exceeding 10,000 citations. Notably, two of his works rank among the 100 most cited papers globally.
He is the only scientist to win both a Nobel Prize (2010) and an Ig Nobel Prize (2000 for levitating a frog). He has been knighted in the UK and the Netherlands and is a member of prestigious academies in China, the USA, and the UK.
