Anders Priemé is a Full Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Copenhagen's Faculty of Science, where he leads research on soil microorganisms and their role in climate systems. He serves as PhD Coordinator for the Department of Biology and sits on the Directional Board of the Center for Volatile Interactions, reflecting his leadership in microbial ecology research.
Professor Priemé earned his MSc in Biology (1993) and PhD in Microbial Ecology (1996) from the University of Copenhagen. His academic journey includes positions as Professor MSO (2012-2019), Associate Professor (2004-2011), and Research Associate Professor (2000-2003) at UCPH, following postdoctoral work at Michigan State University and within various University of Copenhagen institutes.
His research centers on the ecology of soil microorganisms, particularly their production and consumption of greenhouse gases and volatile organic compounds. Priemé investigates how climate change affects soil microorganisms and their feedback mechanisms to climate systems, with special focus on microorganisms in extreme environments. His work bridges fundamental microbial ecology with urgent climate science questions, examining everything from Arctic tundra to halotolerant bacteria in Greenland.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on volatile organic compounds in extreme environments, microbial adaptations to climate change, and the biogeochemical roles of microorganisms in greenhouse gas cycles. His work spans Arctic ecosystems, extreme environments, and connects microbial processes to broader climate systems.
- Winner of Science Slam, Planetariet, Copenhagen (2021)
Professor Priemé has supervised 95 MSc students, 7 PhD students, and 6 postdocs since 2002, demonstrating his commitment to academic mentorship. His current research is supported by significant funding including the DNRF Center of Excellence for Volatile Interactions (2023-2029), EU Horizon 2020 projects, and InnovationsFund Denmark grants. He teaches General Microbiology, Microbial Biotechnology, Basic Arctic Biology, The Human Microbiome, Advanced Bacteriology 2, and Arctic Biology.
As a key member of the Center for Volatile Interactions and previously the Center for Permafrost, Priemé collaborates with an international network of researchers across multiple disciplines. His work connects microbiology with climate science, environmental chemistry, and ecosystem ecology, positioning him at the forefront of research on microbial responses to global environmental change.
