Dr. Martin Brummell is a Lecturer in Environmental Science at the University of New England's School of Environmental and Rural Science. He holds a PhD in Soil Science (University of Saskatchewan, 2015), an M.Sc. in Genetics (Simon Fraser University, 2006), and a B.Sc. in Biology (University of Victoria, 2001). His academic journey transitioned from marine biology to microbial ecology, with fieldwork in the Canadian High Arctic and extensive postdoctoral research in peatland restoration across Canada prior to joining UNE.

Brummell's research spans microbial ecology, pollination biology, and ecological restoration. His work focuses on microorganism dispersal between flowers/insects, pesticide impacts on pollinators, and ecosystem recovery in peatlands and metal-impacted landscapes. Key areas include greenhouse gas exchange in polar and disturbed ecosystems, plant-soil interactions, and microbial community dynamics.
His recent publications reveal a focus on microbial ecology in pollination systems, peatland restoration carbon dynamics, and Arctic soil biogeochemistry. Articles analyze vegetation effects on greenhouse gas fluxes, decomposition metrics in restored ecosystems, and microbial drivers of nitrogen cycling in extreme environments.
Currently, Brummell coordinates units ERS381, ERS581, and ERS502 while maintaining active research programs. His expertise bridges soil science, entomology, and climate change mitigation through ecological restoration.
