Anatol Lieven

Anatol Lieven holds the title of Visiting Professor at King’s College London (Department of War Studies) and Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service in Qatar. He is also a Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation. With a PhD in Political Science from the University of Cambridge, his career spans over three decades as a journalist, scholar, and policy analyst focusing on South Asia, the former Soviet Union, and US foreign policy.

His research interests emphasize insurgency/counterinsurgency, terrorism, Islamist movements, and geopolitical dynamics in Pakistan/Afghanistan/Iran and Russia/post-Soviet states. He has authored influential books including Pakistan: A Hard Country (2011) and America Right or Wrong (2004/2012), and contributed to strategic policy initiatives such as the FCO-funded Afghanistan stakeholder conferences (2009-2011).

Publications span journals like Survival, International Affairs, and New York Review of Books, covering topics from Soviet-Afghan war analysis to contemporary US strategic culture. His work bridges academic rigor with policy relevance, addressing critical issues of global security and development.
