Anandh Babu Pon Velayutham

Anandh Babu Pon Velayutham is an Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition & Integrative Physiology at the University of Utah, part of the College of Health. He holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Madras and completed postdoctoral training at Virginia Tech. His academic career includes roles as an Assistant Professor at the University of Utah (2012–2019) and earlier positions as a Lecturer at Islamiah College and Sengunthar Arts and Science College in India (1995–2007).

His research focuses on the interplay between diet, gut microbiota, and vascular health, with a particular emphasis on blueberries, strawberries, and metabolic syndrome. Key areas include gut microbe-mediated metabolism of dietary phytochemicals, microbial modulation of cardiovascular health, and diabetes-related vascular inflammation. He has secured grants from the USDA, Wild Blueberry Association of North America, and the American Heart Association, among others.

Dr. Velayutham has received numerous awards, including the 2024 University of Utah Distinguished Teaching Award and multiple College of Health recognitions. His teaching includes courses on molecular nutrition, macronutrient metabolism, and nutritional biochemistry. He has published extensively on topics like microbiome-cardiovascular interactions, dietary interventions for metabolic disorders, and endothelial inflammation mechanisms.

His work integrates animal models, human studies, and biochemical analyses to explore how dietary components influence microbial ecology and vascular outcomes. Current projects investigate strawberry-derived microbial metabolites, gut microbial signatures in adolescents with Type 1 diabetes, and the role of ceramides in intestinal stem cell behavior.
