Anand Yang is a Professor of History at the University of Washington, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences and the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies (2002–2010 director). His expertise spans Comparative Colonialisms, Modern Asia, South Asia, and World History, with a focus on agrarian societies, legal systems, and transregional connections.
Education: PhD from the University of Virginia and BA from Swarthmore College.
Research interests include colonial labor dynamics, penal colonies, and global historical frameworks. Notable works: Empire of Convicts (2021), Bazaar India (1999), and an annotated translation of Thirteen Months in China (2017). Current projects explore Indian labor diasporas and a memoir on 1960s New Delhi.
Teaching includes South Asian history and policy courses on global poverty and U.S. Asian foreign policy. Professional service includes roles with the American Historical Association and World History Association.
