Anand A. Yang is a Professor of International Studies and History at the University of Washington, Seattle, and the Golub Chair of International Studies. He served as Director of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies from 2002 to 2010 and previously taught at Sweet Briar College and the University of Utah, where he chaired the History Department and directed the Asian Studies Program.
- Education: BA from Swarthmore College, PhD in History from the University of Virginia.
Yang’s research focuses on colonial India, agrarian relations, crime in British India, transregional world history, and global labor migrations. His work spans historical analysis of peasant-trader-market dynamics, Indian penal labor in Southeast Asia, and comparative labor migrations of Chinese and South Asian communities in the 19th and early 20th centuries. He is currently working on two book projects addressing coerced Indian labor in colonial Southeast Asia and diasporic labor movements.
Yang has held editorial leadership roles, including former editor of The Journal of Asian Studies and Peasant Studies. He currently serves on the editorial boards of Asian Studies and History journals and edits two world history book series (Oxford University Press and University of Hawaii Press). He has also led professional organizations such as the Association for Asian Studies (2006-7) and the World History Association (2007-9).
