Shatam Ray is a Lecturer III in the Department of History at the University of New Mexico (UNM), serving as Honors Advisor. They hold a Ph.D. from Emory University (2020), an M.A. from Jawaharlal Nehru University (2009), and a B.A. from St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi. Their research focuses on environmental history, labor regimes, and modern Asian history, with a current book project examining opium cultivation and governance in 19th-20th century Malwa, Central India. Teaching emphasizes interdisciplinary methods, including digital humanities like (H)GIS, podcast production, and material studies, covering courses such as 'Environments and Diseases,' 'Drugs and Commodities,' and 'Decolonizing Asia.'
